Positive Behaviour for Learning - Value of the Week - Repectful
During week 6 our students will look at this explicit teaching focus in a number of ways. Through explicit and incidental teaching when students are moving about the school they will be encouraged to respect the learning spaces of others by using walking feet and quiet voices. The teaching of these skills help facilitate assembly and general classroom noise levels. During playtime and at hometime students will be encouraged to walk to their destination using an inside voice volume.
Parents and Carers you can assist with this learning by reminding your young person to use their walking feet and quiet voices when you are out in the community and when inside your home. You can use the quiet visual from you visual lanyard from the at home learning pack to remind your young person visually if required.

The Term 1 Partnership Breakfast took place on Wednesday 4th March. All Senior students volunteered as part of Certificate I in Active Volunteering on Tuesday to set up for the event. Students that are part of Certificate I in Hospitality prepared breakfast, using fresh ingredients donated to us by Roger from Woolworths Mudgeeraba.

We also had 4 students volunteer on Wednesday morning, they were able to show our partners and community members the skills they have been developing. Students were supported by senior staff to greet guests and direct them to the venue, assist with tea and coffee, serve breakfast, provide guests with a snapshot around what they do in their certificate courses and sell student-made products from the market stall.
We offered a networking activity to help the businesses and community members in attendance to connect with each other.
Our guest speakers were Will, Nicolle and Ky Greenwood. Will and Nicolle are the parents of Ky who is a past student of Mudgeeraba Special School. Will and Nicolle had a vision to raise awareness on autism through the creation of a short film, Ky’s Story - the life of their son.
Ky’s Story raises awareness of autism and is a snippet of Ky’s life as a toddler to adolescence. The film was released in 2015, receiving 2 million views within the first 48 hours. Ky’s Story is a free resource for families and carers to share about this often misunderstood neurological developmental disorder, shining a light on the realities of a family living with autism and the challenges they face together.

It is fantastic to see the beautiful writing by students that is happening in our classrooms every day. The students participate in modelled, guided and independent writing across all key learning areas, and could be labelling in Science, writing about characters in English, writing shopping lists and recipes in Hospitality, or purposefully writing their name by signing in every morning.
Students access writing in multiple ways, depending on their needs. Alternative pencils, such as keyboards, alphabet charts, and devices are some ways our students are expressing their thoughts and feelings during writing.
Make sure to look for the students published work displayed in classrooms and hallways as you walk around our school!
Signing out, Louise
