Greenheart Cluster Speaking Up Competition
Today our Mudgeeraba State Special School semi-finalists delivered their speeches at the Greenheart Cluster Speaking Up Competition Grand Finals.
Our students were well received with audience engagement and we were so proud to have them represent our school.
Congratulation to all our Semi Finalists on the public speaking sklls they displayed today - Akisha Benjamin - Stephanie Hearne - Austin Adams - Kendall Coutinho and Mackenzie Kello.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
During week 9 our students will learn about this teaching focus in a number of ways. Through the explicit and incidental teaching, students will explore the skill of patience by waiting for objects, items, assistance or by waiting for their turn to talk during class discussions. Explicitly teaching students to wait may help with the management of behaviours related to anxiety.
Parents can assist with this learning in a home school partnership by asking your young person to wait for short periods starting with as little as 2 seconds and increasing the waiting time for items, objects and assistance depending on your young person’s concept of time.21st May - 27th August 2021
The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual state wide initiative for schools and home-educated students. It is not a competition, it aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning.
Mudgeeraba students can successfully complete this challenge either by engaging in a shared reading experience with a caregiver or by independently reading 20 books before 27th August 2021. All students who complete the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland.
We have added a printable copy of the Individual Readers Record should you wish to print it at home. These forms are also available in hard copy at the school administration desk.
Angels at First Base
Oregon versus Washington – a college woman’s softball match to decide who would advance to the division playoffs, delivered more than just a game for fans, one day in 2008.
Sara wasn’t the Western Oregon Wolve’s best batsman, as a matter of fact, she’d never hit a homerun, ever! With 2 runners on bases, a failure with the bat would send her team packing. But, that day, she swung with everything she had, and sent a ball flying over the left-field fence. Sara had hit a hommer!
In her excitement, Sara took off running, but missed first base. The base umpire called to her to turn around and go back to first. However, as she turned, something popped in her knee and she slumped to the ground in excruciating pain.
I’ve never popped my knee, let alone played competition softball, not that I wouldn’t if ever I got the chance. But, I’ve found myself in challenging moments where everything was perfect, up to a point. We don’t always have total control over our circumstances, and sometimes life can go pear shaped, and there’s nothing we can do about it. Like my sister always said, ‘it is what it is!’
The rules clearly point out, that injured players cannot receive assistance from their team in such situations. They aren’t even allowed to touch the player, unless it’s to carry them from the field. Umpires huddled and debated the situation, exploring all legal options. Sara, was stuck – her dream hit had come to nothing but humiliating injury, and her team would lose their bid for the playoffs. But just when it looked like her hommer had turned into a bummer, help came from the most unlikely place.
What happened next, provided fans with a “not a dry eye in the house’ moment. Players from the opposing team, ran out to Sara, and lifted her and ran her back to first. Lowering her enough for her dangling leg to touch the base, and repeating it 3 more times at each other base, Sara completed her hommer, thanks to the opposition. They had won the game, and Sara’s angels sacrificed their playoffs for an act of incredible kindness.
I’ve seen friendships like this. I’ve seen folks receive kindness from places they didn’t expect, and I’ve seen people receive help when they needed it most. This world isn’t easy, but I know that there are countless people, who are kind, in the world too. May I encourage you to touch base with someone this week. May I encourage you to adopt an unconditional smile when you do, and hope for nothing, just to keep the kindness going. And, may I dollop out a bigger serving of encouragement, to encourage you to reach out if you do need a hand – when you fall and pop your knee in life, don’t be afraid to call out for help. Support is out there. Even if they don’t wear the same colours, they may be just a softball diamond away from making all the difference.
Please find attached permission approvals if you have not completed. These assist us with our school planning and marketing of quality education and to keep students safe eg sunscreen and insect repellant.
