Greenheart Cluster Speaking Up - School Champions
This Semester Mudgeeraba State Special School students have been busy preparing speeches to participate in the Greenheart Cluster Speaking Up Competition. It was wonderful to see speeches delivered orally and with AAC for students who have complex communication needs at our special assembly on Wednesday. You can see the concentration and focus of our students as they delivered their speech to their peers in the block. This competion is a wonderful event that our school students participate alongside their peers from schools within our cluster.
Congratulations to all our finalists, we wish them good luck on Friday 11th June when they participate in Semi-final round of the Greenheart Cluster Speaking up Competition. Remember practice is the key. You can ask your classroom teacher to share the speech if your young person is a finalist.
National Simultaneous Storytime
At 11am on Wednesday 19th May 2021, Mudgeeraba Special School participated in National Simultaneous Story time an event that is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read aloud simultaneously in various locations across Australia. The book explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
By facilitating National Simultaneous Story time Mudgeeraba Special School aims to:
- promote the value of reading and literacy,
- promote the value and fun of books and
- promote story time activities
This year we celebrated our love of literacy by engaging in an intergalatic read aloud session. Our teachers embedded AAC into the shared reading experience with the use of PODD, Aided Language Displays and Core word boards.
21st May - 27th August 2021
The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual state wide initiative for schools and home-educated students. It is not a competition, it aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning.
Mudgeeraba Special School students took part in this wonderful initiative in 2019 with over 155,000 other young Queenslanders from 850 schools reading a total of 2.16 million books. We pride ourselves on offering a balanced approach to literacy teaching and learning across the P-12 campus and would love our families to once again support this initiative. For students to successfully complete the challenge they must read or experience 20 books during the reading period. Students who complete the challenge will have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland.
We have added the a printable copy of the Individual Readers Record should you wish to print it at home. There will be forms available at school and one will be sent home in your young person's communication book.
2 Weeks to go!
We’re holding the School Fun Run as a major fundraising event this year. The event will be held on 4th June in alignment with our Burleigh Fun Walk. We are really hoping to raise $10,000 to go towards our playground upgrade. For reaching $10,000 last year, we secured ‘The Big Show’ from School Fun Run for our event this year which includes three inflatable items and Chase the Cheetah.
To start fundraising, sign up for a Student Profile Page at schoolfunrun.com.au. You will be able to access online fundraising and can win a $20,000 Ultimate Family Package! If you have not already done so, please return relevant pages of the permission forms to you class teacher to assist with transport planning for the event.
Students who raise $10 or more will receive a reward, and the more money you raise the better the reward, and the more you help the school!
We’re looking for all students to participate in the Burleigh Fun Walk and we’re organising a great day for our community, so we’d love everyone to come down to support our students. If you have any questions about the Burleigh Fun Walk Event, please contact your classroom teacher or any questions about fundraising, please contact the School Fun Run Office on 1800 FUN RUN.
The Angels at ALDI
I slung my back pack onto the passenger seat, and carefully laid out my gear on the floor of the back of my car. I slumped behind the steering wheel, dialed in some tunes on Spotify, plugged in my phone, and headed off to Aldi to pick up some supplies before heading home. It had been a long day. The 5pm sunshine had bundyed off, and I was feeling a little clagged from a crazy busy day.
Have you ever had one of those super busy days where everything rushes by in a blur, and by the end of the day, all you want to do is go home, put on your favourite tracky-dacks, and become one with the couch? Your head feels like mashed potato, and the merry-go-round you’ve been riding, although finished for the day, feels like it hasn’t stopped, and is still twirling and spinning out of control.
That was my day last Friday.
At Aldi, I trudged down the aisles in search of sausages, wraps, chicken stock, dark chocolate, and cheese and crackers, while a screaming child in the sauce aisle was in mid-crescendo, sounding like a metal thrash drummer inside my throbbing headache. At times like these, you wish you could just press the fast forward button and get the heck out of everywhere! And, if by the hand of the angel of all that resembles bad luck, a lady and her husband, with a trolley so full that it looked as though they were attempting the world record of goods in a shopping trolley, beat me to the only open checkout. My kingdom for a break!
Does anyone else roll their eyes at the sky when stupid situations like this, make life seem so, well…. stupid? But it wasn’t long before the only stupid Aldi customer in the store, was me!
“Go ahead, you’ve hardly got anything, and we have all this!” smiled the lady with the over-stacked trolley, as she waved me through.
“Oh, um… thanks!” I replied, with an awkward smile.
Aldi angel number one.
“Hi there. How are you? How’s your day been?” beamed the friendly person behind the register. As he checked through my groceries, he continued the positive chat, and somehow lifted me out of the doldrums with a smile.
Aldi angel number two.
Just when I needed it, not one, but two angels from Aldi lifted my spirit with their smiles and their friendliness. Both were totally unexpected. Both were full of grace. And the worse thing about it; I didn’t even catch their names! I even went back the next morning to say thank you to the cashier person, but they weren’t there.
Sure, I’d thanked him at the time, but I didn’t take the opportunity to show him any appreciation. Opportunity lost. I think next time, I’m going to make a little more effort to notice the angels at Aldi, especially when they prop up at the exact right moment when needed. And boy, were they needed that day!
Angels, who would’ve thought! Do you know any by name? I’m going to learn at least one.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
During week 6 our students will learn about this explicit teaching focus in a number of ways. Through explicit and incidental teaching when students are moving about the school they will be encouraged to respect the learning spaces of others by using walking feet and quiet voices. The teaching of these skills help facilitate assembly and general classroom noise levels. During playtime and at hometime students will be encouraged to walk to their destination using an inside voice volume.
Parents and Carers you can assist with this learning by reminding your young person to use their walking feet and quiet voices when you are out in the community and when inside your home. You can use the quiet visual from your visual lanyard contained within the at home learning pack to remind your young person visually if required.P&C 2021 & EOI Grants Coordinator & QCPCA Corrdinator
We are also pleased to announce that the Ministers Office has supported P&C Day recognition for Maurie Rowe. Maurie will attend the luncheon on Friday 21 May for P&C Day. Thanks Executive for nominating this outstanding member of our community. Maurie is our treasure for sure.
We received 30 tickets from Lions for Movie tickets and the P&C conducted a lucky draw and two tickets per child drawn were forwarded. If you do not want the tickets might you please return them to school for redistribution. We are so grateful for this support.
The Queensland Government has decided to discontinue school banking programs in Queensland government schools from 31 July 2021. If you are unsure of other methods of depositing to your child’s account, please feel free to contact the Bank’s general enquiries hotline on 13 2221 or alternatively visit your local CommBank branch.
If your child is eligible to receive a reward, please notify myself as your School Banking Co-ordinator prior to Thursday 24 June 2021.
We would like to thank you for your participation and support throughout the School Banking program.
Volunteers and non teaching staff within our school inclusive of our P&C members are required to hold a valid Blue Card in order to forfill their role within our school.
