Today the special ladies in our lives were treated to a wonderful Mother's Day celebration which took place in the Geyer Trade Training Centre. Our guest speaker Bobby Napier faciliated a wonderful Art Therapy experience of making a name badge and helping us get to know each other with a greater intensity we shared the meaning behind the artefacts on our personalised name badge. Mothers, carers, sisters, Grandma's/Nana's and Aunties and our one very welcomed gentleman were amazed by the literacy skills on display by our young people. We, at Mudgeeraba Special School, would like to wish all the special ladies a very warm and wonderful Mother's Day.
4 Weeks to go!
We’re holding the School Fun Run as a major fundraising event this year. The event will be held on 4th June in alignment with our Burleigh Fun Walk. We are really hoping to raise $10,000 to go towards our playground upgrade. For reaching $10,000 last year, we secured ‘The Big Show’ from School Fun Run for our event this year which includes three inflatable items and Chase the Cheetah.
To start fundraising, sign up for a Student Profile Page at schoolfunrun.com.au. You will be able to access online fundraising and can win a $20,000 Ultimate Family Package! If you have not already done so, please return relevant pages of the permission forms to you class teacher to assist with transport planning for the event.
Students who raise $10 or more will receive a reward, and the more money you raise the better the reward, and the more you help the school!
We’re looking for all students to participate in the Burleigh Fun Walk and we’re organising a great day for our community, so we’d love everyone to come down to support our students. If you have any questions about the Burleigh Fun Walk Event, please contact your classroom teacher or any questions about fundraising, please contact the School Fun Run Office on 1800 FUN RUN.
Olympics Unleashed at Mudgeeraba Special
QLD Olympics Unleashed - Visit to Mudgeeraba Special School
The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) has welcomed Mudgeeraba Special School to be a part of ‘Olympics Unleashed’, a program taking Olympians, Paralympians and QAS Athletes into Queensland schools to inspire and motivate young Australians ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games. We are excited that Olympic Unleashed is coming to our school on Friday 14th May. Kira Hedgeland is a triathlete who will be presenting to all of our students followed by an interview hosted by Senior 1 students.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
During the school week our students will look at this explicit teaching focus in a number of ways. Through explicit and incidental teaching when students show signs of anxiety, teachers can explicitly model how to request a break. The teaching of locating safe members of the community could occur by explicitly teaching the logo’s of the Police, Fire and Ambulance along with the Surf Life Saving flags.
Parents and carers you can assist with this learning by labelling and pointing out information kiosks, Police persons and Police stations, Fire persons and Fire Stations, Surf Life Savers, Doctors, Nurses and other community members, who you may consider safe members of the community for your young person.Happy Mother’s Day Nanna!
When I was growing up, my mum, or ‘nanna’, sent us kids off to “learn to do stuff.” She simply wanted us to have fun and be able to do a lot of different things, and join in on life. She sent us to all kinds of activities: swimming lessons, tennis, piano, ‘physie’, athletics, soccer, netball… you name it, we either learnt it or did it. With nanna’s encouragement, we also joined everything that was going at school: cricket, touch footy, recorder, art, tennis, squash, water polo, golf, netball, soccer, drama, school musicals, and pretty much every other sport or activity that you can think of for kids. We even had to go to “Chinese” lessons on Sundays (I’ll let you ponder on that one for a spell).
It must have cost a fortune! We weren’t rich by any stretch of the imagination. What was she trying to achieve? Especially with the swimming: do I really need to be able to swim 90 laps of an Olympic size pool? But, I can honestly say that the years of activity, helped me to build self- confidence, learn a lot about winning and losing, and learn how to get along with people in the process. I learned a lot about endurance due to my swimming training: 32 laps of freestyle, 16 laps of back and breast stroke, then end with 16 laps of “walk backs” (sprint a lap, then walk back to the start and do it again!). It helped to shape a healthy attitude towards persistence and resilience. We didn’t know it at the time, especially on freezing mornings, but through it all, nanna taught me heaps. Not to mention the fact that she, like so many super mums do today, provided us kids with the most precisely planned and managed free taxi service, that kept us kids participating in the things we did. I know as a fact that it wasn’t always easy. But she did it because we were her children.
At meal times, I always noticed that nanna always picked off the best stuff for us kids. But we never gave a second thought, to getting drumsticks while nanna got the parson’s nose! We didn’t even pause for breath, when we got the chocolate Neapolitan ice-cream, and nanna got the strawberry (yuck!). We didn’t even say, “hey, wait a minute!” when we got the choice fish and chips, and nanna got the charred battered bits. It wasn’t for years later, that we realised that nanna got what she got, so we could get what we got! Super mums make sacrifices, right?
I remember when I was about 8, mum wrapped me up in my parker and beanie, and took me to the museum, and Art Gallery. It was cold on the train, but we had an amazing day. It was a mummy/son date (which I had no idea about at the time), and I’ll never forget it. We had a ball strolling around the exhibits and reading all of the background stories to everything we saw. I can still remember how stinky the old Egyptian mummy exhibits were, and how thick the paint was applied to the Van Goghs. And it was there that I remember, was the beginning of my interest in learning and my interest in Art. I think that’s called ‘inspiration’, when something leaves enough of an impression that it helps to shape who you would eventually become.
And that’s only three stories I can share for now!
Nanna, was wise, self-sacrificing and loving. And I believe that she represents what all mums seem to be: beautiful human beings who spend a lifetime putting good stuff into the children they love and adore, who give us the best that they can manage, even if they have to go without, and love us with all of their hearts; not to mention that they’d protect their kids with their lives!
This mummy’s day, it may not be possible for all of us, but if you can, and if it’s doable, let’s hold a special thought in our hearts for our mums. I personally will be spooning up a great big dollop of chocolate ice-cream on Sunday and saving the strawberry for me (yuck!). What will you dollop up for mum this Mother’s Day?
