Premiers Reading Challenge Celebrations - Hon. Karen Andrews
The Premier's Reading Challenge is a home-school partnership which aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read and to experience reading for pleasure and learning.
On Monday 18th November the Honourable Karen Andrew will attend our Celebration Assembly at 1.30 pm and present certificates to students who read the required number of books based upon their year level during the reading period.
Value of the Week - I am Respectful
Term 4 Week 7
We sit in our seat, we wear our seatbelt, we wait for food and drinks until we are off the bus, we keep our bus clean.
During week 7, our students will look at these explicit teaching foci. Learning will occur through incidental and explicit teaching scenarios during Community Outings and at other times across the year. Students will learn the importance of respect for our school property with a focus on our buses. You can partner with the school and assist with this learning by modelling the same expectations when traveling in your car on the weekend or when driving to and from school.
Term 4 Partnership Breaskfast
The Term 4 Partnership Breakfast took place on Wednesday 13th November. All Senior students volunteered as part of Certificate I in Active Volunteering on Tuesday to set up for the event. Students that are part of Certificate I in Hospitality prepared breakfast, using fresh ingredients from Woolworths Mudgeeraba.

We also had 8 students volunteer on Wednesday morning, they were able to show our partners and community members the skills they have been developing. Students were supported by senior staff to greet guests and direct them to the venue, assist with tea and coffee, serve breakfast, introduce the guest speaker, assist with presenting certificates and sell student-made products from the market stall.

Our guest speaker was Jude Kalman, an independant filmmaker from the Gold Coast. Creating her company FishFilms represented her embarking on a new journey; to drive her work with NGOs, charities and social enterprises toward the forefront as she seeks to tell “people stories” that inspire and connect humanity.
We offered a networking activity to help the businesses and community members in attendance to connect with each other.

Jude spoke about the challenges faced by communities and charities in Africa,
and her film making experience, providing some insight and perspective for the
problem solving we embark on in Australian community groups, schools and
businesses.
“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” -African proverb.
Jude quoted this African proverb as she has seen first hand the power of working together and the positive impact on communities. We are on the journey to go far, together with students, families, community and partners.

The P&C Association thank our community for their kind donations towards our final raffle of the year.

On Monday 11th November marked Remembrance Day. Each year on this day, Australians observe one minute's silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. Manaia Harawira proudly represented the Student Council by attending a Remembrance Day Service held by the Mudgeeraba-Robina RSL Sub Branch at Elsie Laver Park in Mudgeeraba. Mudgeeraba Special School sold poppies to raise money for those who served our country.

It is encouraging to read on the NDIS site that our P&C Association recommendations were embedded:
Breaking news from Canberra this afternoon. NDIS Minister Stuart Robert gave a speech at the National Press Club where he talked about his plan to get the NDIS working better for everyone who needs it.
There was a lot in the speech but just a few key things:
- Participants will be able to use their funds more flexibly - including moving funds between core and capacity building
- NDIS will provide independent assessments so people can get assessments for access at no cost to them
- Joint planning meetings and people being able to see a draft of their plan before it’s approved
We’ll post a more detailed story on our website tomorrow but for more information now you can go to https://www.ndis.gov.au/news/4016-minister-reveals-plan-improve-ndis.
That’s not the only story you will find on our website. Head on over and you can find out below about our 100 day plan for the new boss of the NDIA; hear from our great friend George Taleporos about what the Aged Care Royal Commission said about young people with disability in aged care; and learn about changes to SDA that you might have missed (hint: the announcement was made on the provider side of the NDIS website).
Our 100 day plan for the new NDIA CEO
The new NDIA boss Martin Hoffman started his new job last week so we made sure he had a great to-do list ready for him on his first day of work.
Done! Your messages delivered
A BIG thank you to everyone who sent in their stories, experiences and ideas for change for our submission into the Tune Review.
