This year NAIDOC Week will be celebrated from the 8th to the 15th of November. This year’s theme is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’. The week provides a great opportunity to participate in activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
The 2020 National NAIDOC Poster, Shape of Land, was designed by Tyrown Waigana, a Noongar and Saibai Islander (Torres Strait) man.
Tyrown’s artwork tells the story of how the Rainbow Serpent came out of the Dreamtime to create this land. It is represented by the snake and it forms the shape of Australia, which symbolises how it created our lands. The colour from the Rainbow Serpent is reflected on to the figure to display our connection to the Rainbow Serpent, thus our connection to country. The overlapping colours on the outside is the Dreamtime. The figure inside the shape of Australia is a representation of Indigenous Australians showing that this country - since the dawn of time - Always Was, Always Will Be Aboriginal Land.
Students and Staff Wellbeing:
Families it is vital that if students are unwell that we support their wellbeing at home. We have had cases of tummy upsets and colds and we want to minimise the impact on the students themselves, their peers and their staff. Public Health and our nurses implore us to employ rigorous hand washing practices and our cleaners are being even more diligent with our facilities cleaning regime. We have had no new reported cases of Gastro related illnesses or shingles.
School Payments:
As the end of the year we would greatly appreciate the finalisation of students school offer of $180 and an outstanding fees as we have 35 percent of families who have not contributed to 2020 School Offer. Your assistance assists us to provide necessary day to day resources for your young person.
The department requests all schools to consider in the new school year with invoiced School Levies and we are drafting our proposal of the Student Resource Scheme for 2021 options for P&C.
Thank you for supporting us with engaging community events again this week.
Regards
Colleen Hope
.
This information night is aimed at families of current Year 9 and Year 10 students. Please RSVP to Katie Andrew Deputy Principal via the school office on 5559 3333.
Positive Behaviour for Learning - Term 4 - Week 7
During week 7, our students will look at these explicit teaching foci. Through incidental and explicit teaching scenarios during Community Outings and at other times across the year, students will learn the importance of respect for our school property with a focus on our buses. Teachers may explicitly pair road safety ideas into the Health & Physcial Education Unit as it is an important self safety message to sit in designated seats and wear seatbelts when travelling.
Parents can partner with the school and assist with this learning by modelling the same expectations when traveling in the car on the weekend or to and from school. Assigning seats to your young people if they are not still travelling in a car seats and encouraging them to participate or independently put on their own seatbealt each time they travel.

On Wednesday 11th November, two of our student leaders, Logan Farthing and Angel Marriott, attended the Mudgeeraba Remembrance Day Service at Elsie Laver Park. Our students experienced a local event acknowledging the significance of Remembrance Day, commemorating the loss of Australian lives in all wars, conflicts and peace operations. They made a wreath with other students within the Junior Secondary cohort and announced the laying of their wreath in front of Mayor Tom Tate and other Gold Coast dignitaries. Mudgeeraba Special School staff and students stopped at 11am to participate in a minute of silence to remember those who sadly lost their life in all wars.
FINAL P&C Meeting Moved to 20 November
We have a change of date for our next P&C meeting. It will be moved from 13th November to 20th November. Colleen is off-site on the 13th and as it’s our last meeting of the year.
Thanks for understanding

Covid Guidelines Weekly Updates
Stop the Spread of COVID-19
Maintaining the required hygiene and physical distancing measures in place in our school. These are our most effective ways to stop the spread of COVID-19.
In Term 4 we will maintain limiting large groups of adults onsite or outside personnel from outside agencies eg therapists. All contractors for work repairs will adhere to Departmental guidelines.
The greatest news today is to hear that Graduations can now support dancing as an activity.
We would like to clarify that if a member of your household is sick, you are not required to stay home unless you have received health advice to do so.
Any person who is sick (staff, student or parent) should stay home and if they have any COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild, get tested.
Symptoms of COVID-19 can include:
- Fever
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Loss of taste or smell
- Tiredness and muscle aches
- Vomiting and/or diarrhoea
- Shortness of breath
If students or staff present at school as unwell we will follow up and request an imediate early departure until a medical clearance is provided and confirmation that the person is well.
We need to ensure we stay home if recurring flu like symptoms present to decrease the spread of influenza.
Further information about COVID-19 testing is available via the link below:
If you have any questions, please call your doctor or call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84).
