Tonight we will focus on the personalized celebration for our students finalising the traditional school life to embark on their post school life. We celebrate with students who have had a seamless education at Mudgeeraba Special since Prep and some who have come to join our team from local and interstate schools along the way.
The students in recent years have been guided by a planning process known to us as their Personal Future Action Plan alongside the Australian Curriculum and Certificate Courses. This plan has been the guide for our students and families embracing all of life domains not just the academic aspects. It has been planned and reviewed a number of times with the input of each of these students before you, their families, staff and program stakeholders. This plan encompasses life domains and will assist them into the future.
The team of staff, families and stakeholders have supported each student with exposure to a tailored program where it has been possible. Parents have encouraged and supported every step of the way. Program support has looked very different this year and our staff have creatively designed a variety of onsite programs to replicate the community experience. This year we have all been very flexible and agile.
This year’s graduation cohort includes four students in Year 12 whose family has explored options for their young person and have decided take this worldly step at the same point most other secondary schools in Queensland do.
To the staff can we thank them for their professional, diligent manner, their patience, their creativity in supporting our graduates here tonight. We are proud to have such a skillful team who are so invested to ensure the best for each young person that they work with in the senior phase of learning.
2020 school year has been unprecedented with a pandemic, Home Learning School and more onsite focus. We received a high recognition for our home learning processes by our department. I sincerely thank our Deputies Katie Andrew and Tash Markwick, Heads of Curriculum, Pedagogical Leaders, Administration and Staff for their outstanding work at MSS. It is apparent to me that the high performing communities achieve the best outcomes for young people when there is a strong relationship with their families and community, where the heart of our work is the child and that we uphold high expectations for each young person.
The crew at Mudgeeraba Special School, regional office, our community are one of the most amazing teams I have seen. As evidenced by our political and education leaders here tonight. It is a best practice example of teamwork. It is humbling to be a part of this wonderful system of State Schooling. We will continue to aim high in 2021 with hope a return to a new way of working to deliver quality education.
Together we can truly do great things. And as the Captain of the ship can I acknowledge that a Captain is only as good as its crew. Thank you
Students and Staff Wellbeing:
Families it is vital that if students are unwell that we support their wellbeing at home. We have had cases of tummy upsets and colds and we want to minimise the impact on the students themselves, their peers and their staff. Public Health and our nurses implore us to employ rigorous hand washing practices and our cleaners are being even more diligent with our facilities cleaning regime. We have had no new reported cases of Gastro related illnesses or shingles.
School Payments:
As the end of the year we would greatly appreciate the finalisation of students school offer of $180 and an outstanding fees as we have 35 percent of families who have not contributed to 2020 School Offer. Your assistance assists us to provide necessary day to day resources for your young person.
The department requests all schools to consider in the new school year with invoiced School Levies and we are drafting our proposal of the Student Resource Scheme for 2021 options for P&C.
Thank you for supporting us with engaging community events again this week.
Regards
Colleen Hope

Positive Behaviour for Learning - Term 4 - Week 6
During week 6 our students will undertake explicit and incidental teaching to try new skills. Encouraging students to stretch their skill set and perform different classroom roles. During Age Appropriate Pedagogies Investigation lessons students can learn to be a photographer, a recorder of information or an observer.
In a home school partnership you might encourage your young person to try new skills, by introducing new chores and tasks, trying new food options or by sitting in a new location to eat dinner.
Music: Count Us In Celebration Day
Yesterday the students at Mudgeeraba Special School participated in the Music: Count Us In (MCUI) celebration. MCUI acknowledges and advocates for the importance of music in Australian schools. MCUI culminates Celebration Day, which was held nationally yesterday, on 5th November, 2020. The day involves registered schools across Australia, including Mudgeeraba Special School, singing the same song, on the same day, at the same time. The program song for 2020 was called, ‘You Won’t Bring Us Down’ with the theme of the song encouraging young people to stand up for what they believe in. Due to the current warmer conditions, students celebrated from their classrooms via a whole school live virtual experience where they sang and/or signed the song.
Expression of interest Student Escort 2021
Some of our young people require student escorts to be able to travel safely to school via Education Queensland and Training approved transport. We are looking to create a pool of potential student escorts for the 2021 school year. If you are interested in applying details on how to apply are attached. A paid blue card and police background check is required for any successful applicants.
Our Parent Talk magazine is a parent focused publication and published on a quarterly basis. It is circulated throughout Queensland state schools and P&Cs as a resource to provide parents and school communities with regular news and information on a wide range of topics relevant to parenting and education. Research confirms that where parents and community are engaged in their children’s education the outcomes vastly increase. Help us ensure Every Child has Every Chance to a successful education. All editions of Parent Talk can be viewed here - P&Cs Qld Parent Talk Publication.
FINAL P&C Meeting Moved to 20 November
We have a change of date for our next P&C meeting. It will be moved from 13th November to 20th November. Colleen is off-site on the 13th and as it’s our last meeting of the year.

P&C Container Refund & Recycling Scheme
Please bring in your recycling to the school. The mobile reciptacle is stationed at the front carpark behind the bus shelter in school hours as the students are part of the program and move the wheelie bin between 9.15 am and 2.00 pm.
One Hundred percent of the donations go to our P&C Association.
Covid Guidelines Weekly Updates
Stop the Spread of COVID-19
Maintaining the required hygiene and physical distancing measures in place in our school. These are our most effective ways to stop the spread of COVID-19.
In Term 4 we will maintain limiting large groups of adults onsite or outside personnel from outside agencies eg therapists. All contractors for work repairs will adhere to Departmental guidelines.
The greatest news today is to hear that Graduations can now support dancing as an activity.
We would like to clarify that if a member of your household is sick, you are not required to stay home unless you have received health advice to do so.
Any person who is sick (staff, student or parent) should stay home and if they have any COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild, get tested.
Symptoms of COVID-19 can include:
- Fever
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Loss of taste or smell
- Tiredness and muscle aches
- Vomiting and/or diarrhoea
- Shortness of breath
If students or staff present at school as unwell we will follow up and request an imediate early departure until a medical clearance is provided and confirmation that the person is well.
We need to ensure we stay home if recurring flu like symptoms present to decrease the spread of influenza.
Further information about COVID-19 testing is available via the link below:
