Today we combined our Day for Daniel Walk with World Teachers Day and Grandparents Day on Sunday. The combined thread is community with all three celebrations.

We honour our expert teaching team and their commitment to investing everyday in the life of every student. We are proud to be educators at Mudgeeraba Special School.

Senior 1-4 classes accessed the community this week through their Travel Training program to attend the Gold Coast 600. Students watched the cars on track and had time to interact at stalls. Some students had real life practice, using their communication and money handling skills when buying lunch at the venue. 

A great event in our community with opportunities for our student to get involved.

Today the Mudgeeraba Special School community celebrated Day for Daniel, Australia’s largest child safety awareness and education day. Students across the campus have been learning the three R’s- Recognise, React and Report which align with the Health and Physical Education curriculum. Students, staff, parents, grandparents, carers and volunteers wore red and walked one of three routes with their class groups. We combined the celebration with World Teachers’ Day and Grandparents’ Day by celebrating with a sausage sizzle on return from the walk. It was a wonderful day to acknowledge safety messages and celebrate key people in our students’ lives.

Attention School Leavers

We are under the belief that you need to apply for this funding while in your last year of school as part of your NDIS plan. You may wish to contact your LAC, Support Coordinator or the NDIS if your plan/review needs adaption.

Delivering School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES)    

School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) is an early intervention approach for Year 12 school leavers. It’s designed to support their transition from school to employment.

Providers who deliver SLES help young people prepare, look for and gain employment. They work with them to provide meaningful, individualised capacity building activities so they can achieve their employment goals.

How SLES works

SLES is funding, which can be included in a participant’s NDIS plan. It is used to develop a strategy to help build their skills and confidence in areas where they feel they need help. The NDIS can fund SLES for up to two years, depending on the participant’s circumstances.

The aim of SLES is to build a participant’s ability and confidence to work with a Disability Employment Service (DES).

Each person’s SLES supports will be different. However, the following can assist participants to build employment readiness:

 Money handling skills                             

 Time management skills

 Communication skills

 Discovery activities

 Extended work experience in open employment

 Learning how to take instruction at work

 Travel skills

Our school is partnering with a new program called COACH to help families in challenging places flourish. With the support and encouragement of trained mentors, who will meet with families weekly or fortnightly for twelve months, the participants will work toward life goals and positive change. This is a free service.

At times do you feel isolated, overwhelmed or anxious? Are you struggling to meet your financial budget, find employment or make friends? Would you like an encouraging, non-judgemental friend to talk with who can assist in overcoming the challenges of life? 

Mudgeeraba Special School is partnering with the COACH program for parents who would like support to manage their way into a better life.  If you would like to know more, please talk with Di or Adrian, or come introduce yourself to Dawna Cahill, the COACH Coordinator, at our next My Time Coffee and Cake Morning.

  NDIS Review

P&C Submission

Our P&C Association will be making a submission to the NDIS Review on behalf of our school community. You are welcome to present your individual celebrations and concerns with your interactions with the NDIA and/or the inadequacy of funding in your child’s NDIS Plan as part of the P&C submission.
If you choose to do this, please email me at maurie.rowe@bigpond.com by 23/10 details of the issues you wish to have addressed, for example:
- Plan underfunded by $......... compared to last year.
- Funding reduced due to underspend in 2018/19. The underspend having been due to your family needing time to source trustworthy people to provide services such as after school care, respite etc being the first year of NDIS on the Gold Coast.
- Bureaucracy - administration problems; delays in paying invoices etc.
- Lack of understanding by NDIA staff of the needs/ challenges families face looking after children with disabilities 24/7.
- Providing respite/ community access funding for students on school days.
- Coordinating Therapists around school contact hours.
- Continued advocation for Dept of Education Transport to/from school - as private vehicles, private taxi or uber or carer transport are collectively unsuitable due to safety/security needs of our children and the impracticality of safe and secure pick up/set down areas due to space limitations.
This is just a sample of the issues some families have faced. Please include others relevant to your experiences.
Your submission should be anonymous to protect your family’s privacy.
This information will be incorporated into the P&C submission to the Review.

Individual Submissions:                                                                                      As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, you can make an individual submission through the website www.engage.dss.gov.au. Click on “current consultations” and on the right hand side of the page you will see items that you can access for your submission, namely
- Survey - There is a short or long form survey which asks specific questions of your experiences of the NDIS. If you need help with the survey, contact the Hotline 1800 358846.
- Make a submission - You can provide a written submission outlining your particular experiences of the NDIS (as an alternative to doing the survey).

“Click on ‘discussion paper’ and the short form version to view a list of topics/issues that a you may wish to comment on in your submission.”                                        - View Public Submissions - This provides copies of public submissions already lodged and which may help you in preparing your input.

This review is a great opportunity to express your celebrations and concerns with the NDIS and influence the Federal Government to make changes to the legislation and NDIA’s operations to present fairer outcomes for people with disabilities into the future.
The closing date for submissions is 31 October 2019.
The review will be completed by December 2019 and the changes coming from the review will be legislated in July 2020.
