Dear Mudgeeraba Special School Families,
We are now just past the mid-point of the final term of the year and staff and students are extremely busy with assessment and reporting processes.
Over the next few weeks, we will be meeting with the families of our new 2025 prep students. Through Tailored Transition meetings with families, school staff and external agencies we are able to gain a deeper understanding of each student before they start school. This ensures a smooth transition into school and enables our prep students to ‘Start Strong’.
Towards the end of the term our prep students will be invited to spend time in our prep classrooms to get a sense of what ‘big school’ is all about.
Our numbers for next year in prep are looking healthy but we are still taking enrolments, so please pass our information on to any families that you may know of that are yet to enrol. Having all students allocated into a class prior to the end of the current school year ensures a very smooth start when all students return towards the end of January. Please also let us know if your child won’t be returning in 2025 or will be attending later in the term.
It was truly a celebration of our success as just recently we received our school opinion survey data that I couldn’t be prouder of. The feedback that we received from all stakeholders, which included parents and staff was just fabulous.
There are way too many positive affirmations to mention them all here, but I will share some key indicators with you:
Parents reported:
- Teachers at this school are interested in my child's wellbeing – 100%
- This school has a strong sense of community – 100%
- This is a good school – 100%
- Students are treated fairly – 100%
- Teachers at this school expect my child to do his or her best – 100%
School Staff feedback:
- I use the Australian Curriculum to plan, teach and assess – 100%
- Students are encouraged to do their best at this school – 100%
- I enjoy working at this school – 100%
- This school fosters respectful relationships among all students. – 100%
- This school looks for ways to improve – 100%
On a joyful note, we celebrated our Year 12 students at their graduation last Friday night. This event marked a significant milestone in their lives and was an event to remember! This very special evening honoured all of their hard work, resilience, and achievements throughout their school journey. Surrounded by family, friends, and supportive staff, our graduates stepped into the next chapter with pride and confidence.
The celebration was filled with heartfelt speeches, laughter, and a few tears, highlighting the impact each student has had on our school community. We are incredibly proud of each graduate and wish them all the best for the future!
I would like to personally thank Kustom Cars Gold Coast for giving each of our graduates the opportunity to arrive at the ceremony in style. The atmosphere was truly electric, what a wonderful experience for our students and their families, one that I am sure will not be forgotten!
A big shout out also needs to go to all of our Senior School staff, particularly Bree and Mr Steve Dowlan, for all of their hard work and dedication in organising such a memorable graduation event. Everyone’s efforts truly made the day special for our students and their families. Their attention to detail and commitment to creating a meaningful experience did not go unnoticed. Thank you for going above and beyond to make this celebration a success!
Warm regards,
Renée Zhu
Principal

Gold Coast Suns Dreamtime Story and Dance
On Tuesday 5th November Mudgeeraba State Special School were treated with a visit from The Gold Coast Suns Community Programs staff. This included, Jarrod Harbrow (Ex GC Suns First Nations player), Millie Rainger (GC Suns Community Programs Co-ordinator) and GC Suns Mascots Sunny Ray and Sunny Skye.
It was a fabulous way to connect with First Nations Cultures and traditions as Jarrod educated students on the meaning of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags, talked about the origins of AFL Football from indigenous perspectives and brought along lots of artefacts such as Boomerangs, GC Suns Jersey’s, clacking sticks and a didgeridoo.
Students played hot potato with the possum fur balls, were invited to respond to guess the animal whilst Jarrod mimicked Australian animal sounds on his Didgeridoo, and were treated to a Dreamtime Story reading by Millie, which was written by Aunty Cathy Candice,, which was about the Gold Coast and the origins of The Gold Coast Suns.
The finale involved a traditional Men’s and Women’s dance with support form Sunny Ray and Sunny Skye. Students were able to meet and greet after and have their photos taken and a bonus gift where Every student was presented with their own copy of YALGUN SUN.
