Dear Mudgeeraba Special School Families,
This is the last newsletter for the term with the September holidays beginning next Monday. I hope everyone has a fun and relaxing holiday break and we will see you all back at Mudgee for the start of the final term of the year on Monday the 30th of September.
The last 2 weeks have been very busy and there are some very noteworthy celebrations. Firstly, our school had the privilege of welcoming David Niemeijer (Founder and CEO of AssistiveWare), Shannon Braithwaite (School Liaison Officer), and Amanda Hartman (SLP-AssistiveWare). They provided valuable feedback to our school and were impressed with how effectively Mudgeeraba Special School has integrated Proloquo into teaching the Australian Curriculum. In recognition of this success, AssistiveWare has invited two of our teachers to present at the AGOSCI conference in Adelaide next March.
Throughout the year teachers have actively engaged in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to enhance their expertise in key areas such as Reading, Writing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Age-Appropriate Pedagogies, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). This week, they had the opportunity to share their insights with their colleagues, creating a vibrant environment of collaborative learning. The session left everyone feeling energised and excited to return to their classrooms, ready to implement these new practices in their teaching. I am very excited about seeing all of the amazing strategies our teachers implement to improve our students’ educational outcomes.
I want to extend a sincere thank you to the entire P&C for their incredible efforts and dedication. Their hard work and ongoing support make a tremendous difference in our school community, and it does not go unnoticed. From organising events like the Father’s Day stall, to advocating for the best interests of our students, their contributions have helped create a positive and enriching environment for everyone.
I would also like to acknowledge the hard work our teachers, in particular Mrs Leigh Swaddling for organising our Father’s Day event that was held last Friday. It was fabulous to have such a great response to this event. I am always proud of the outstanding community support we get here for any of our advertised events and to welcome new visitors.
Today, Mudgee Melodies performed at the 75th Anniversary celebration of CedarBrook Age Care. This event is yet another wonderful example of the strong community spirit at Mudgee, where our students continue to excel, building confidence while showcasing their incredible talents.
I hope you all have an amazing holiday and your child returns ready for another busy and eventful term 4!
Warm regards,
Renée Zhu
Principal

Term 3 PBL Celebration Farm Fair.
Students, and staff, had a wonderful day with the animals from Old Macdonald’s Travelling Farm! Our school values of being Connected, Aware and Responsible were on full show as each student had the opportunity to engage with a variety of animals and fair games. It was a wonderful way to end a busy Term 3!
On Friday 6 September we were joined by families for our Father’s Day celebration. Our wonderful Senior hospitality students prepared and served a sausage sizzle and our upper school Mudgee Melodies sang beautifully for our guests. Then we had a great time making and flying paper planes in our blocks and we finished off the day dancing at Friday Fest.
Regional Athletics Championships
Today some of our Junior Secondary students represented our school at the Regional Athletics Championship at Runaway Bay hosted by Gold Coast Recreation and Sport. They had a great time participating with other schools in track events and activity challenges. Congratulations to all the students involved and thank you to our staff for supporting them.
In the Certificate I in Hospitality course, students have been learning about front of house services this semester. This week they hosted a high tea and practiced their skills in greeting customers, then taking, preparing and delivering their orders. Congratulations to all the students for showcasing their fabulous vocational skills.
Another awesome job by our students and staff at the Senior School Markets at Robina Town Centre this week.
The wind blew across the surface of the dam creating tiny ripples that the sun reflected off, making the water look like a sheet of glistening metal in the midday sun. The breeze coming off the water cooled my face as I looked across the vastness of the city’s water supply. On the other side of the dam there were mountains filled with green trees and lush grass leading down to the waterline. Just into the water beyond the shore was such a contrast to the mountains behind, because coming up from under the water were dead spiky trees. The dead trees caused problems for anyone who was wishing to take a boat for a spin in the dam basin. Though, despite its challenges I could just make out a man in a kayak navigating the gabs between the trees as he tried to catch some fish for, I could only guess his evening meal.
My wife and I sat in our camp chairs enjoying the first rays of sunshine after a very wet week. We drank a homemade mocktail created by adding some soda water to a juice we had purchased at a local shop. The drink was then topped off with some fresh passionfruit. Just over from where we were sitting was a young couple. The girl laid on a colourful picnic blanket and placed a purple scarf over her face then quickly fell asleep in the midday warmth. The guy left her while she slept and proceeded to take many pictures of the dam and its surroundings and of course his sleeping partner. After a very busy and at times stressful week I was at peace and had time to regenerate my self and get renewed strength for the week that lay ahead.
Taking time out and finding our peaceful place wherever or whatever that may be is one of the most important things we can do to maintain a healthy and balanced life. Some of the wisest minds in history have talked about the need to rest one day a week. So, what brings you peace, is it reading a book, watching a movie, or perhaps getting back to nature like my wife and I? Whatever it may be, find the time to do it regularly, to regenerate yourself and those you care for.
