Dear Mudgeeraba Special School Families,
Welcome to the 2024 school year at Mudgeeraba Special School!
Despite the challenges of the extreme heat, we are thrilled to report a wonderfully positive start to the school year. A special welcome goes out to our new Prep families and those experiencing the Mudgee community for the first time.
I extend a heartfelt thanks to our entire school community for contributing to such a successful and settled beginning. Our staff's meticulous planning and organisation, coupled with the dedication of parents and carers in preparing their children for school, have truly made a difference.
Many teachers have already initiated discussions with parents and carers about expectations and collaborative support strategies. Individual Curriculum Plan and PFAP meetings are scheduled in the coming weeks, providing an opportunity for face-to-face discussions on supporting your child's success in learning.
At Mudgeeraba, we value your feedback and strive to continuously improve. Our communication platforms, including Seesaw, have strengthened the school-home partnership significantly.
Our dedicated staff is committed to creating an inclusive and nurturing environment where every student thrives academically, socially, and emotionally. We recognise that a strong partnership between school and home is paramount to student success, and we look forward to collaborating with you to support your child's educational experience.
While we encourage open communication, please understand that teachers may not be available to read or respond to electronic communication during core learning times due to teaching commitments. Electronic communication on non-work days, weekends, or school holidays is at the discretion of the teacher.
Thank you for your understanding and support, as we work together to ensure the best possible outcomes for our students.
Drop off and pick up times
As we start another school year, I want to take a moment to remind everyone of our important procedures regarding drop-off and pick-up times for students.
If you find yourself dropping your child off after 9:00 am or picking them up before 2:30 pm, we kindly ask that you please sign in and out at the main office. This simple step helps us ensure the safety and security of all students within our school community.
Furthermore, we kindly request that parents refrain from walking through the school to collect their child during these hours. Instead, once you have signed in at the office, our staff will promptly notify your child's class and arrange for a staff member to meet you in the office.
We understand that there may be times when you need to discuss your child's needs or address any concerns outside of these designated hours. To ensure that our teachers can focus on teaching during the core instructional time (between 9:00 am and 2:30 pm), we ask that you schedule meetings or discussions with your child's teacher at a mutually convenient time outside of these hours. This process not only helps maintain a safe and orderly school environment but also ensures that our teachers can dedicate their full attention to our students during instructional time.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in adhering to these procedures. Together, we can achieve a smooth and successful school year for all.
Warm regards,
Renee Zhu

Mudgeeraba Special School
Welcome back to another exciting year at Mudgeeraba Special School! It has been a bustling start, and our senior classes are diving headfirst into a world of creativity, learning, and fun.
Exploring the World of Tessa Snaps Snakes!
One of the standout moments of the first week was the launch of our quality writing program, Tessa Snaps Snakes. Our senior three students embarked on a thrilling adventure, crafting snake puppets and slithering around the playground to the beats of Aboriginal tunes. This unique program allowed us to seamlessly integrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, creating a rich and inclusive learning experience. Dramatic play around the snake theme with the puppets also filled our days with ssssssensational fun.
Embracing Glasser Quality World Values
As you know, Mudgeeraba Special School is the first special school in the world to become a Glasser Quality World School. These theories underpin and guide everything we do. The first week back is always a fantastic opportunity for our students to get to know each other better and discuss what comprises their "Quality Worlds."
Revving Up for the Car Show!
The excitement continued as Senior Three geared up for the upcoming car show. Channelling their inner automotive enthusiasts, students brainstormed ideas for their car, emphasising the metaphor that they are in the driver's seat of their own lives, making choices and steering their paths. Vroom vroom vroom! Senior Three throws down the gauntlet, challenging all classes to beat them to the finish line. Watch this space for updates on this thrilling race!
Concert Year is Upon Us!
This year promises to be extra special as it's concert year! Senior Three, along with all the senior classes, eagerly started brainstorming themes and selecting music for this much-anticipated event. The enthusiasm was fantastic as students danced around, listening to music, and exchanging creative ideas. We're gearing up for an amazing night filled with talent, joy, and celebration.
It’s a Wrap
As I wrap up the first week of the year, I reflect on the brilliant start we've had. There's an abundance of action and fun awaiting us in the coming months, and I can't wait to share these experiences with your young person and, in turn, with you. Stay tuned for more updates and be prepared for an extraordinary journey ahead.
Thank you for your ongoing support.

My wife and I were going for a walk along the beach on one of those really hot days in January. It was late afternoon; the sun was low and a cool breeze blew over us. There were children laughing and swimming in the shallows. Young couples were sunbathing, or at least using the afternoon sun to take some amazing pictures for their social media contacts. Some people were running, others were fishing or surfing. Young parents were walking along the beach with the toddlers splashing and looking at the shells.
I looked at the young couples and I remember when our kids were that young. It had been an awesome time in our life but that had passed. I remembered when my wife and I had been courting. We used to enjoy swimming in the late afternoon sun or sunbathing on the beach. I also remembered when my children were a little bit older and they loved coming down to the beach for a swim or paddling on their boogie boards. Part of me missed those days but, to be honest, I don't know if I’d have the energy to run after my kids as I used to when they enjoyed swimming, or to keep up with them as they ran as fast as they could along the beach.
A wise man once said that there was a time for everything under the sun. Those words are so true. We all go through different times in our life and each is awesome at that time, but later on it wouldn't be as awesome or we wouldn't be able to do it as well as we did when we were younger. I think that's a good thought to reflect on as we start another year. Last year there were some incredible times that everyone had and there were probably some really tough times as well. However, they are all behind us now and we are standing on the breach of a New Year and perhaps a new chapter in our life. Children are a little older and they may be moving into a different time of their life as well.
So as this year begins let's look forward to it with excitement to see the potential rather than the problems that may arise. Let’s enjoy this time in our life and this time in the life of our children. To quote another wise man. The past has gone and the future is bright.
