Last week I delivered the shared story about Frank's Red Hat in a multimodal experience. Students were experiencing the attached as powerpoint on the LED Screen to support the hardcopy book and puppet presentation. I would like to thank the students who helped me out with my character and setting puppet roleplay of the story. Literacy experiences such as these build valuable oral language and vocabulary development skills which underpin reading behaviours and ensure greater comprehension. The following image is the Quality Reading approach that our staff undertake in classes every day. Please feel free to inquire with your teachers about the rich reading lessons they are offering your young person.

Hello, parents and guardians,
As we embark on Semester 2, we are thrilled to share the exciting initiatives and curriculum themes the Teacher Release Team (TRT) has in store for your children. Our aim is to provide engaging and meaningful learning experiences that foster growth and awareness. Here's a glimpse of what's happening in our classrooms:
Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS):In HASS, we are delving into the theme of "Caring for Special Places." Each grade level has a unique focus:
- Junior: Your little ones are learning to appreciate the special place they call their own - their bedroom.
- Lower Middle: Students are exploring how to care for special places right here in our school.
- Upper Middle: Our upper middle schoolers are taking a virtual journey to Kakadu National Park.
- Junior Secondary: The Great Barrier Reef is the topic, instilling a sense of responsibility for its conservation.
Health:In Health class, we are all about "Staying Safe." We'll be discussing various ways and the people who play pivotal roles in keeping us safe every day. This theme encourages personal safety awareness, a valuable life skill.
Senior School:Our senior school students are continuing their journey of personal development and decision-making. They'll also have the opportunity to dive into exciting elective courses like art and athletics, allowing them to explore their passions and interests.
We are excited about the valuable lessons and experiences that await your children in Semester 2. We encourage you to engage with your child about these educational topics, fostering discussions that promote growth and understanding.
We appreciate your ongoing support and collaboration in making our educational journey a success. Together, we can ensure that every child reaches their fullest potential.
Warm regards, Louise Stone-Schmidt, Teacher Release Team

Teacher Aide Appreciation Week
This week we said a big “Thank you” to all of our amazing Teacher Aides at Mudgeeraba Special School. We are blessed to have such a skilled and passionate group of educators, committed to supporting our school community and enhancing the learning outcomes of our students. Our students did done some predictable chart writing to show how much they appreciate the Teacher Aides in their class.

On Wednesday 20 August, we shared a Father's Day breakfast with some special people in our students' lives. We would like to thank Maurie Rowe, our P and C Grants Officer and grandfather who shared with us some information about our wonderful P and C. Enjoy your Father's Day celebrations on Sunday.

There I was alone in the dark, in a foreign country near one of the greatest natural wonders of the world, wondering if I would ever find my family again. The afternoon had started out so well. I was a 12 year old boy, my dad had trusted me to go down to the reception of the resort where we were staying, near the Grand Canyon. It was late in the afternoon when Dad told me to go directly to reception by following the road and then following it back again. I nodded, took the money from Dad and went straight to reception via a shortcut that I had found that took me through three hedges but was much faster than following the road. I arrived at reception just as the last rays of the sun shone on the resort.
I went to buy the ice as directed but as I approached the counter I got distracted by someone playing a game similar to space invaders. I watched for a while then finished the transaction and stepped outside to return to my family. The temperature had dropped and I could see many shining stars in the dark night sky. I had a decision to make, go home on the road or go back to my room the same way I came down. I chose my short cut; I knew the trip back would only take me five minutes through the gardens but if I took the road, it would take maybe ten minutes.
Twenty minutes later I realised I had made a mistake. I had no idea where I was or how to get back to either reception or my family. I remember standing there in this heavily treed part of the resort with freezing hands from holding the ice and my feet wet from the melting water that had dripped on me. I fell to my knees feeling hopeless and isolated.
I then saw the headlights of a car coming up a road approximately one hundred metres from where I was, I followed the light and saw them pull into an accommodation unit. I needed to make another choice try to try and fix the situation myself or swallow my pride and ask for help. I swallowed my pride and asked for help, about fifteen minutes later me and my family were reunited.
All of us, sometimes find ourselves in situations where we have limited or no choices, sometimes because we have made mistakes, other times through no fault of our own. At these times we need to make decisions and it may mean lowering our pride and asking for help. As we get older, we find it harder to reach out for help, however when we do it is surprising to find there are many who are there ready and more importantly able to help. Next time we find ourselves struggling reach out, help is there you do not need to go through things alone.
Hi Mudgeeraba Special School Community.
I want to tell you about a truly heart-warming experience I had this week. As you all know, each year the P&C runs the Mother’s and Father’s Day stalls. This week, I was helping on both days. However, on Wednesday, due to unforeseen circumstances I was on my own when usually there would be 3 or 4 helping out.
Once aware of this, Natasha Marwick (Deputy Principal for Juniors and Middle School) offered to give me a hand if and when I needed it. A little later in the day, I was visited by Deb Beddows who runs the library. Steve Dowlan (Deputy Principal for Junior Secondary & Seniors) had asked Deb to come and give me a hand also. There wasn’t much happening at the time so Deb sat and kept me company for a bit which meant so much to me.
Just another couple of examples of just how amazing our Mudgee Special staff are and how lucky we are as parents to have them not only supporting our kids, but us as well. A huge thank you to all of our Beautiful staff and thank you Tash, Steve, and Deb for being supportive of me personally at the Father’s Day stall.
At the end of the day though, Mother and Father’s Day stalls are not the responsibility of the staff and if we as parents wish for our kids to have the experience of shopping for special occasions like these, then we need to make it happen.
That said, to ensure that these opportunities can continue, I would like to ask you to consider giving even an hour of your time to lend a hand when you next see the P&C requesting help.
For those of you who are in need of a chill out session, this coming Tuesday 5th September, Toni has a Mindfulness/Relaxation session planned.
So join her for a cuppa, she’d love to see you.
The next uniform shop day is this coming Tuesday 5th September, 8.30am-9.30am.
Have a great weekend and take care everyone.
Paula.
(Uniform Coordinator and Vice President of P&C)
Wellbeing: Timeout QLD Health for Ill Health
Mudgeeraba Special School families thanks for your diligence in supporting your students at home when they are unwell. Unfortunately there is still a range of flu and gastro related illnesses in the community.
Keeping students, families and staff well is a shared responsibility and we are following health advice when we all work together. In this fortnight newsletter we advise that families have been enacting the health policy and keeping their young people at home.
If you have any queries please contact through the office our departmental nurse Bec Hayden or myself as Principal.
