Last Thursday our school campus enjoyed our belated National Science Week celebrations. Each student had a turn at becoming investigators when they used their senses to explore a range of experiences related to the theme of Science Week which was Food: Different by Design. They explored a farm small world, planted bean seeds, watered plants using a watering can activated by a switch, engaged in fruit stamping, exploded a lemon volcano, sorted seeds, smelled herbs, found and graphed wooden fruit and vegetables. Students used their senses to list or describe what they could see, touch and smell. Thank you to parents, grandparents and carers who attended our celebrations with us.

Last week was Speech Pathology Week (22-28 August). “Communication is everyone’s right” and we are so grateful that Departmental speech pathologists, Cindy and Carly, are part of our school community. They provide resources, strategies and professional development to assist our staff to develop the communication skills of all our students.
Students and staff are all reminded that, while attendance matters, with this COVID situation you must remain at home if you are sick, and in accordance with Queensland Health advice, go and get tested!
- Message for Parents: If your child is sick, they must not go to school. You should keep them at home and away from others.
- Message for Students: Tell your parent, guardian or teacher if you are feeling sick.
- Message for Staff: Do not come to work if you are sick.
Finally, please support our P&C by volunteering your time and/or purchasing a gift at the Father’s Day stall this Wednesday and Thursday (1-2 September). The P&C will also have a sausage sizzle at the Mudgee Mini Olympics (Friday 10 September) and would be very grateful for your support.
Kind Regards
Natasha Markwick
Acting Principal

Positive Behaviour for Learning
During Week 8 our students will learn about this explicit teaching focus in a number of ways. Through explicit and incidental teaching, students will ask to use and flush the toilet including washing their hands. Students will be explicitly taught to close the toilet door and respect the right to privacy of others. The teaching of these skills will be in conjunction with the use of visual schedules to understand the micro skills involved in going to the toilet and washing their hands. Students will be encouraged to flush the toilet after each use at school to ensure a clean and hygienic environment for their peers.
Parents you can assist with this learning in a home school partnership, by encouraging your young person to flush the toilet after each use and wash their hands. Please ask your teacher if they use a specific visual schedule, for your child in their classroom as this may assist with teaching the skill at home. Families can assist this learning by explicitly teaching your young person to understand the need for privacy and shutting the door when they are in the toilet at home. When skills are taught at home and school it helps students with generalisation of learned skills. Generalisation is the process where your young person has the ability to use skills that he/she has learned in new and different environments and transfer them to other environments. Whether the skills are functional or academic, once the skill is learned, it is required to be used in multiple settings in order to be considered generalised.
AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE OI OI OI!
Overnight, when a swimmer hit the wall for gold, ear-deafening cheers whooped their way through lounge rooms across Australia, and across the globe. Moments later, his friend, hit the wall for Australia’s 6th Gold Medal. What a night:
Paige Greco – CYCLING: 3000m Individual Pursuit,
Emily Petricola – CYCLING: C4 Pursuit,
William Martin – SWIMMING: 400m freestyle,
Lakeisha Patterson – SWIMMING: 400m freestyle,
Rohan Crothers – SWIMMING: 50m freestyle, and
Ben Popham – SWIMMING: 100m freestyle!
AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE, OI, OI, OI!
Not to mention, the world records they broke, and the equally courageous silver and bronze medals won by their team mates, and … the fact that Australia is currently leading the medal count for the 2021 Paralympics. And, we’re out in front of all the big name countries, which includes one in particular, which if I’m not wrong, is yet to win a medal! But, this is not about gloating, it’s about celebrating!
AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE, OI, OI, OI!
For me, when Rohan Crothers, burst into tears after winning gold in the pool, his emotions spoke volumes about life. It heralded something incredibly worthwhile to cerebrate: it heralded hope, and that it can be done. And, speaking of worthwhile celebrations, and heralding hope;
We at Mudgeeraba Special School, prove every day, that IT CAN BE DONE! Every day here at school, our amazing team of teachers and teacher aides, cement hope into our students. And, our beautiful students demonstrate that it always worth it. Every day here at school, medals are won in the incredible genre of Life Achievements:
COMMUNICATION: A student, successfully used their communication tool to choose an activity, GOLD!
CITIZENSHIP: A student demonstrated good manners, GOLD!
SCHOOL VALUES: A student demonstrated the value of caring, helping a fellow student with their Ipad, GOLD!
ACADEMICS: A student successfully achieved their ICP Literacy goal, GOLD!
READING: A student retold a familiar story using a picture board, GOLD!
PODIUM MOMENT: A student said that they were happy, and felt safe at school! GOLD!
May I encourage you this Gold Coast Show weekend, to celebrate life. We have no idea what’s around the corner, so celebrating our students, celebrating life, celebrating who our champion children are, and for the wonderful things they bring to our own lives, is a gold, silver and bronze medal, all rolled up in one.
MUDGEE, MUDGEE, MUDGEE, OI, OI, OI!
